Nicole Ari Parker is an American stage and television actor known for her performance as the fiery lawyer Teri Joseph in the Showtime show Soul Food. Nikki Kodjoe became her stage name upon her marriage. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland she showed an inclination toward acting since the age of five and was awarded a Best Actress prize at the Maryland high-school competition. She received her degree in acting at New York University after working at 'The Washington Ballet Company' and in theatre. Contractor, a Mumbai-born Indian living in Nigeria from the time she was seven years old. knew a great deal about world cultures and traveling at such a young stage. She attended boarding schools between the ages of 7 until 9 in London. After that her family relocated home to Toronto (Canada) where they spent her entire childhood. When she was in Toronto, Contractor excelled in academics, and was trained to become ballet dancer of classical training. She was a student at the Etobicoke School of the Arts - a specialized arts high school in which she studied not only dance, but also theater. Contractor decided to take acting more seriously at the age 16 after almost 10 years dancing. When she completed her high school education, she was awarded an all-inclusive scholarship to the University of Toronto. At the University of Toronto she completed a Masters in Theatre and she also double-majored in Psychology and Sociology. Contractor was offered the leading role in Pericles following a brief time in University. The audition was held for the role at Stratford Shakespeare Festival (Ontario Canada) and won. The year 2002 was a great one for her. Canadian reviewers praised her performance in 92 productions of Pericles. Contractor accepted the offer to attend Stratford's Conservatory program. The Conservatory has only 8 men and four females are admitted to a course of 20 weeks in classical theater. The actress's spot in the next production was secured, and she was offered the part as Hermia.
